Is Bing Full of Bugs or Is Constant Change And “Agility” the Wave of the Future?

The article titled  600 Engineers Make 4,000 Changes to Bing Each Week on WinBeta goes behind the scenes of a search engine. The title seems to suggest that Bing is a disaster with so many bugs that only a fleet of engineers working around the clock can manage the number of bugs in the system. That is actually far from the impression that the article makes. Instead, it stresses the constant innovation that Bing calls “Continuous Delivery” or “Agility.” The article states,

“How about the 600 engineers mentioned above pushing more than 4,000 individual changes a week into a testing phase containing over 20,000 tests. Each test can last from 10 minutes to several hours or days… Agility incorporates two “loops,” the Inner Loop that is where engineers write the code, prototype, and crowd-source features. Then, there’s an Outer Loop where the code goes live, gets tested by users, and then pushes out to the world.”

The article also reminds us that Bing is not only a search engine, but also the life-force behind Microsoft’s Cortana, as well as being integrated into Misrosoft Office 2016, AOL and Siri.

Bing Goes Green, as in Dollar Bills and Brand New Logo

The article on Microsoft News titled Microsoft Releasing New Bing Logo Today briefly overviews the recent growth and profitability of the often mocked and overlooked search engine. Microsoft also updated Cortana lately, which is deeply connected to Bing search. So what will the new Bing logo look like? The article explains,

“In the new logo, Microsoft is switching its color scheme to green as it  “is easier to see over yellow” and “b” in now in upper case. This new version of the logo will be used across various Microsoft apps and services. Speaking to AdAge, Rik van der Kooi, Microsoft’s corporate VP of advertiser and publisher solutions said that Bing is the only search engine that is experiencing steady, consistent growth and have increased our share for 26 consecutive quarters.”

The article also points out that it is Bing powering Yahoo, AOL, Apple Siri and several other services, from behind the scenes. The green logo looks less like an imitation of Google, especially with the capitalization. Perhaps the new logo is meant to be easier on the eyes, but it is also certainly trying to keep up the positive attention Bing has been receiving lately as 1/3 of the search market.

Is Yahoo Going the Way of AOL?

Yahoo hired former Googler Marissa Mayer as its new CEO to turn the company around.  The company is headed towards stormy waters again, which could leave only the ship’s hull.  Yahoo could sell its main operating business and all that would be left is Yahoo Japan, Alibaba shares, and $5 billion in cash.  Mayer would then get the boot, says South China Morning Post in the article, “Yahoo Destined For Tech Graveyard Due To Poor Choice In Chief Executive Officer.”

Yahoo has gone through five CEOs in the past decade and its current shares are trading well below value, making the company only worth at an estimated $2 billion.

Yahoo’s current problems began when the company was formed.  Founders Jerry Yang and David Filo were great inventors, but they were inexperienced running a company.  Yahoo failed to accept Microsoft’s offer and while it floundered, Google stole the search market.

“Determining the right kind of chief executive for a tech company at a particular stage of development represents the most frustrating and critical issue. The weakness of chief executives with a tech start-up or product background like Mayer is that they try to invent and innovate a large corporation out of a problem and into a breakthrough strategy.”

The article explains that Yahoo needed to be knocked down and then rebuilt from the ground up.  A huge movement like that requires more from a tech manager who is only used to positive growth, praise, and giving huge benefits to staff.

This points out that people with different talents are needed to manage a company as well as the importance of a diverse team with varied experience.   Some people are meant to invent and work in the tech field, others are meant to be business leaders.

A Bezos Style World Domination Video

Oh, 1999, what a year that was!  It was full of people afraid of Y2K, TV was still analog, email was still a novelty, and AOL still reigned as the supreme Web browser.  Nobody really knew what Amazon was as many people did their online shopping on individual Web sites or on eBay.  Recode takes a look at a video blast from the past in “Watch Jeff Bezos Lay Out His Grand Vision For Amazon’s Future Dominance In This 1999 Video.”

In 1999, Amazon was a four-year-old company with $1 billion in annual sales.  It started out primarily selling books, CDs, and movies.  The Jeff Bezos video is of a talk he gave at the Association of American Publishers annual meeting, it played on Book TV and nobody watches that, which it is why it probably has gone unnoticed for so long.  While it is a good retrospect about how the company has grown, it also offers some useful information for business entrepreneurs.  The entire video is fifty-five minutes long, but the article contains some of Bezos’s best quotes.  Our favorite is this one about favoring growth versus profits:

“Amazon.com is a famously unprofitable company. And the question is: Are we concerned about it? The answer is, in the short term, no; and in the long term, of course. Every company needs to be profitable at some point in time … Our strategy and we’ve consistently articulated this, is that we believe that this opportunity is so large that it would be a mistake for any management team not to invest in it very aggressively at this kind of critical category formation stage.  We don’t claim it’s the right strategy. We just claim it’s ours. But we do think it’s right. And that it would be a mistake to try to optimize for short-term profitability.”

Jeff Bezos’s advice about favoring growth versus short-term profit definitely worked for him.  Amazon is one of the world’s retailers and it is still growing.  It is set to dominate TV, software-as-a-surface, and air delivery.

Bing Is Very Important, I Mean VERY Important

The online magazine eWeek published, “What The Bing Search Engine Brings To Microsoft’s Web Strategy” and it explains how Bing spurs a lot of debate:

“Some who don’t like the direction in which Google is going say that Bing is the search engine they prefer, especially since Microsoft has honed Bing’s ability to deliver relevant results. Others, however, look at Bing as one of many products from Microsoft, which is still seen as the “Evil Empire” in some quarters and a search platform that’s incapable of delivering the results that compare favorably with Google. Bing, introduced six years ago in 2009, is still a remarkably controversial product in Microsoft’s lineup. But it’s one that plays an important role in so many of the company’s Internet services.”

Microsoft is ramping up Bing to become a valuable part of its software services, it continues its partnership with Yahoo and Apple, and it will also power AOL’s web advertising and search.  Bing is becoming a more respected search engine, but what does it have to offer?

Bing has many features it is using to entice people to stop using Google.  When searching a person’s name, search results display a bio of the person (only if they are affluent, however).  Bing has a loyalty program, seriously, called Bing Rewards, the more you search on Bing it rewards points that are redeemable for gift cards, movie rentals, and other items.

Bing is already a big component in Microsoft software, including Windows 10 and Office 365.  It serves as the backbone for not only a system search, but searching the entire Internet.  Think Apple’s Spotlight, except for Windows.  It also supports a bevy of useful applications and do not forget about Cortana, which is Microsoft’s answer to Siri.

Bing is very important to Microsoft because of the ad revenue.  It is just a guess, but you can always ask Cortana for the answer.

Bing Is A Winner…Huh?

Bing is the joke of Internet search.  Skilled Web surfers…no, scratch that term.  Nobody “surfs” the Internet anymore, unless you are an older person trying to maintain relevancy.  Skilled Web users Google or play DuckDuckGo, but according to Mashable, Bing might be ringing in as many jokes anymore, “Microsoft’s Bing Isn’t Such A Failure After All.”

Microsoft VP of advertiser and publisher Rik van der Kooi said that Bing is now able to pay for itself, contrary to its launch six years ago when it hemorrhaged cash from the beginning.  Microsoft wants Bing to be even more profitable by its 2016 fiscal year, which started earlier this month on July 1.

“Microsoft should provide more clarity on Bing’s financials with its next earnings release in July. Profitable or not, Bing is clearly moving in the right direction. The service’s improved financial position, combined with recent strides in pushing its share of the search market to 20%, offer the clearest argument yet that Microsoft still has the power to muscle its way into lucrative and mature technology categories and find solid footing there.”

The article recounts Bing’s unprofitable history, culminating in its more recent successes that have funneled more green into the search engine. This includes Apple making Bing the default search on its mobile OS, a renewed partnership with Yahoo, a ten year deal with AOL, and Bing sending map imaging to Uber.  It finishes by calling Bing a contender and it looks like that may be true.  Let’s wait until they start making self-driving cars until victory is declared.

Wisdom of Verizon AOL Deal Questioned

Sarah Lacy, founder and editor-in-chief at PandoDaily, is highly skeptical of the official rational behind Verizon’s recent acquisition of AOL. She posits, “Can’t We All Agree the Justifications for this AOL/Verizon Deal are Bat#### Insane?” The post begins:

“What is it about AOL mergers that make no sense?

“I’ve spent the morning intermittently reading various reports by the financial press about Verizon’s surprise/not surprise acquisition of AOL. Early on, they seem divided on whether it was about buying ad tech or content, with many pundits saying Verizon was going the Comcast route… and then it became clear that AOL’s biggest media asset, the Huffington Post, would likely be spun off. The press was similarly divided on whether or not Armstrong was long shopping this company or simply got wowed by how awesome Verizon is during a meeting at Sun Valley.

“But everyone — including the company– insists this deal was about two buzzwords: Mobile. Video. AOL put out some dizzying justifications and everyone nodded like they totally understood.

“Wait, what?”

Lacy doesn’t buy the idea that Verizon acquired AOL for its mobile and video chops (she has a point there). In fact, it quickly becomes clear that the writer’s main problem is with AOL chairman and ex-Googler Tim Armstrong, for she spends much virtual ink delineating his errors, past and present. (She’s especially critical of his handling of the Huffington Post.) Lacy also refutes official statements about this deal one by one, comparing the whole situation to a nonsensical Lewis Carroll scene. See the article if you, too, think this deal is fishy (or if, for some reason, you desire ammo against Mr. Armstrong.)
