The Factiva Metadata Strategy Explained

June 15, 2012

Information Age recently reported on a new data management solution for Dow Jones & Company in the article “The Metadata Strategy Behind News Search Service Factiva.”

According to the article, the new search service, known as Factiva, allows users to keep track of the latest developments in their industries. Originally launched in 1999, the system has since evolved to reflect the changing information consumption habits of target customers.

As text analytics technology has progressed over time, so too have the concepts it can be used to define. Today, Factiva can identify whether a news story relates to a change of management at a company or a bankruptcy, and can encode as much in the metadata.

Greg Merkle, creative director at Dow Jones’ Enterprise Media Group explains:

“As the amount of information that Factiva can derive from its metadata is increasing, its search results are evolving beyond a simple list of relevant stories. We are developing situational solutions for specific business cases, such as supply chain analysis: if you have a list of supplier you rely on, you can do searches that not only show the news, but extract the facts from the stories and present them as interactive dashboard.”

Dow Jones is just one of many companies that has a metadata strategy in place to deal with the increasing amount of data put out by search engines daily. Does your company have one in place?

Coveo Positions Itself Insight Solutions

June 15, 2012

Coveo has a new positioning with Insight Solutions. It does search, business intelligence, and compliance. We learn from “3i Group Leverages Coveo Insight Solutions for Knowledge Continuity and Expertise Finding,” posted at the Wall Street Journal’s Market Watch, of at least one company that is very happy with the product. The press release states:

“3i needed a flexible solution that would easily scale as the amount of information and information sources continued to grow. After evaluating several vendors, 3i selected Coveo’s Insight Solutions based on ease-of-use, flexibility and Insight Consoles, the presentation layer of Coveo’s intelligent indexing technology, which provides information from across sources in a single, unified view, configured by role — so that each user views and interacts with contextually relevant, dynamically updated information.”

3i Group is a leading international investment company who used to rely on the on-board search functions of a myriad of data sources, from email to file systems. Naturally, this approach wasted a lot of time, and the company is happy to have found a solution to that problem that has also turned up more useful information than workers knew existed. 3i is so happy with Insight Solutions, it plans to expand its use to other initiatives such as legal, compliance, and business intelligence. They also look forward to an upcoming enterprise-wide roll out via mobile devices.

This development is an example of how Coveo shows ingenuity in positioning its search technology. The company was founded in 2005 by some of the team which developed Copernic Desktop Search. Coveo takes pride in solutions that are agile and easy to use yet scalable, fast, and efficient. They also boast that “people like doing business with us.” That is something not every company can say.

Helios Treaty Creates Neutral File Ground

June 14, 2012

Helios just fired the web border patrol and initiated a peace treaty for neutral file ground. For decades Mac and Windows have possessively guarded their terrain making it difficult for files to cross from border to border. That is changing according to the article Helios puts spotlight on cross-platform search, the spotlight shining across the border now lights the path for synchronization.

Tom Hallinan, Strategic Partner Manager at HELIOS Software stated:

“The demise of the Xserve, and the increased usage of Macs and mobile devices in businesses, has revealed the shortcomings of the Mac-only Spotlight search from Apple, and the Windows-only Windows Search for Windows. The HELIOS Spotlight-compatible indexing and search system solves that problem.”

“Mac, Windows, and UNIX/Linux users can drag & drop project files from the web browser or local workstation into the WebShare Manager window to enable synchronization of files between the remote WebShare server and the local workstation. Automatic file versioning can also be enabled.”

Helios integrates into Windows Server, Mac OS X, Oracle Solaris, IBM AIX, and Linux, which covers all the major server operating systems. This virtual directory simplifies search by placing all this data on one individual file server, thus enabling ease of access. This is a perfect solution for businesses since the mobile device industry is becoming oversaturated. The Helios treaty designating neutral file territory came at a perfect time

Connected Car Technology

June 14, 2012

Since city dwellers are spending an increasing amount of time in their cars, automobile manufacturers are adopting technology that effortlessly converts vehicles into fully functional mobile offices.  The features of this technology are described in an article by Roudra Bhattacharya entitled “Drive Easy with a ‘Connected Car’” that recently appeared on The Hindu Business Line’s website:

“Most top technology firms such as Microsoft, Google and Siemens PLM are working on ‘connected car’ platforms with top carmakers today. Their  aim? To help you make calls, browse the internet, watch videos and be virtually present at work meetings, while still keeping your hands free to do the most important thing – hold the steering wheel.  Additionally, the car can also act like your ‘credit card’ by paying your toll fees wirelessly. GPS-based navigation systems can also be updated remotely via the Internet, enabling accuracy in directions even for the newest localities.”

Recognizing the growing need for mobile computing applications, Inforbix offers a cloud-based, scalable, and affordable product-lifestyle management (PLM) solution that can be launched through in-car technology systems so that workers can effortlessly find, reuse, and share product data on the go.

Ants Lead the Way for Madrid Search Engine

June 14, 2012

Science Daily announces a new “Search Engine for Social Networks Based on the Behavior of Ants.” Only one problem– A company called NuTech Solutions offered this method a decade ago. Does the fast pace of the tech world make for poor memories?

According to the article, this latest ant-based solution from Madrid’s Carlos III University likens the way ants search for food to the search for relationships of elements in social networks. The resulting algorithm, known as SoSACO, aims to improve results time even as networks grow in size. The write up informs us:

“The way SoSACO works was inspired by behavior that has been perfected over thousands of years by one of the most disciplined insects on the planet when they search for food. In general, the algorithms used by colonies of ants imitate how they are capable of finding the path between the anthill and the source of food by secreting and following a chemical trail, called a pheromone, which is deposited on the ground.”

How exactly the pheromone trail method has been translated into a social media algorithm is not explained, but we can’t expect the team to give away all their secrets. The article does say that SoSACO allows systems to find routes more easily without modifying the graph structure. It also informs us that researchers expect the algorithm could be useful in other applications, like planning freight delivery routes or seeing whether two words are related.

Ah, but can the algorithm carry twenty times its weight? If not, I’m afraid the ants still have it beat.

New SharePoint Book Features Business Connectivity Services

June 13, 2012

The InfoZine story, “Microsoft Sharepoint 2010: Business Connectivity Services,” introduces us to a new book by the same name.  Ideal for all manner of SharePoint engineers and developers, the guide is a good resource for maximizing all the potential that SharePoint has to offer.

The review gives us an introduction:

This hands-on guide is ideal for SharePoint project managers, business analysts, architects, and administrators.

Customization is a big part of utilizing SharePoint, and no doubt this book provides a lot of customization details and tips.  However, many users find that customization is too consuming in terms of time and staff to be able to do it properly.  For these users we recommend a smart third party solution, like Fabasoft Mindbreeze.

Fabasoft Mindbreeze Enterprise understands you, or more precisely understands exactly what the most important information is for you at any given moment . . . The information pairing technology brings enterprise and Cloud together . . . Information pairing brings enterprise information and information in the Cloud together. In this way you can act quickly, reliably, dynamically and profitably in all business matters.

Fabasoft Mindbreeze Enterprise can stand alone or work alongside an existing SharePoint infrastructure, making it a seamless way to add a level of intuitiveness and efficiency without the added investment in customization.  Furthermore, Fabasoft offers an entire suite of additional solutions, seamlessly weaving your SharePoint installation together with your other systems.

Hortonworks Presents a Hadoop Version

June 13, 2012

When one really begins to break down product lifecycle management (PLM) they find at the heart of any platform data management tools.  With this knowledge firmly held as true Hortonworks has released a Hadoop version of their data analytics platform.  The article, “Hortonworks Releases Its Hadoop Version”, on Computer World, explains how the Hadoop platform will make Hortonworks more accessible.

Included in the newest version is a nod to PLM as the article explains:

“To aid in management, the package includes a customized version of Apache Ambari, a Hadoop monitoring and lifecycle management program. With this software, an administrator can set up a single Hadoop instance across a number of servers. Once Hadoop is installed, the software then monitors performance of the servers as well as the Hadoop jobs themselves, presenting the data on a dashboard.”

It is impossible to separate data analytics from data management which, as mentioned above, is the glue that binds all PLM solutions.  Inforbix, a leader in PLM solutions for the engineering industry, has long understood the importance of data management solutions and has achieved a reputation for innovation by providing apps with a focus on finding, sharing and reusing data. With a commitment to open source technology Inforbix is leading the way to the PLM solutions of tomorrow.

Blekko and Firefox Get Engaged

June 13, 2012

Hampered by the lack of a dedicated search engine team, Mozilla is getting some help from Blekko according to CNet’s “Firefox Flirts with Bleko for ‘Instant’ Search.” A new partnership between the two has produced a Blekko add-on for Mozilla’s Firefox. Writer Seth Rosenblatt explains:

“The Blekko add-on (download), developed by Mozilla Labs’ Prospector team, aims to cut down on the repetitive search behaviors of many Firefox users. Mozilla says that its research indicates that people often search for the same term, not because they’re looking to find it again but because they’re attempting to navigate elsewhere. This add-on, like Google’s Instant search feature, cuts down on the extra steps by pre-caching sites, showing preview pages, and recognizing commonly searched-for terms from only a few typed letters.”

Yes, just like Google’s feature. This one, though, was built to work with Firefox, so perhaps that is an advantage for dedicated Firefox users like me. Besides, according to Mozilla developer Edward Lee, future updates could have the add-on sporting site previews, spreading search results across multiple tabs, and (optionally) including results from other engines.

Sounds good. Throw in a do-not-track policy a la Duck Duck Go, and I’m there.

Google may just buy some Firefox love. Stay tuned because money talks in some countries. Maybe Russia?
