How about a Safari with Drones to Hunt Humans?
October 2, 2026
Some people think Putin’s special operation in Ukraine is not a good thing. The special operation has spawned some interesting military tactics. Cheap weapons. $800 drones versus hundreds of millions of dollars in oil refineries. The Atlantic published “Putin’s Human Safari Is The Future Of War.” Russia unleashed drones on Ukraine and the innocent people of Ukraine are well aware of the distinctive noise of the flying war robots. Putin’s drones are allegedly targeting unarmed civilians, chasing them, and killing them. These are the cleverly named human safaris. Imagine small drones, a tracker function, and some kinetic material. Think in terms of mosquitos that follow people around and explode. The United Nations said:
“A United Nations inquiry last year documented hundreds of drone attacks on individuals across eastern Ukraine that targeted people walking on sidewalks, working in gardens, driving ambulances, commuting to work. Sometimes drones hang over burning buildings, waiting for fire brigades to appear so that firemen can be murdered too. The motive can only be terror, and perhaps revenge. Russian troops occupied Kherson at the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022; Ukrainian forces took the city back seven months later following what remains the most significant counter-offensive of the war.”
Ukraine has its own drone technology that does amazing things:
“Many people, myself included, have written about the incredible achievements of the Ukrainian drone industry. In Kyiv, I’ve visited warehouses where hundreds of different drones and robots, each with specialized properties, are on display. They can defend Ukrainians and surveil and attack enemies. They can deliver food and weapons. They can crawl along the ground and rescue people stranded in no-man’s-land. They can make intelligent decisions autonomously.”
The drones are equipped with cameras and the remote operators can see who they are attacking. Russia is choosing to attack citizens. It’s like playing a video game with real people and cheap weapons. An expensive F 35 does not operate with one human, one hit precision in most warfighting scenarios.
Bad actors use what’s available and some are adept in the me too approach to innovation. Burglars might rely on drones to make sure a targeted home is empty. Cheap drones, smart software, kinetics or surveillance capabilities promise a new dimension in options for some bad actors. Yep, technology is making life better… sort of.
