MyChart: A Big Fat Juicy Target. Phishing Can Be Hazardous
September 16, 2026
Phishing scams in the medical field are going to increase as technology advances and bad actors figure out how to manipulate it for their nefarious purposes. It has already happen to hospitals and other medical practices with hospitals in Florida being one of the latest victims according to The Cool Down: “Florida Hospitals Warn Patients About ‘MyChart’ Phishing Scam Targeting Portal Users.”
Bad actors are posing as MyChart, one of the most prevalent patient portals in the United States, by sending spam messages. The goal is to steal sensitive information. It is extremely alarming because older adults are the most vulnerable, especially those who use Medicare, are managing appointments, or viewing test results.
Hospitals in Florida and across the country are advising people that phishing emails are impersonating MyChart. These emails use persuasive titles and information such as “MyChart Medicare Kit” or wellness programs to bait people into clicking harmful links or sharing personal information.
“MyChart is used on a vast scale in the American healthcare system. The portal is connected to Epic Systems, which accounts for about 44% of the hospital market for electronic medical records in the U.S. Epic’s records cover about 253 million U.S. patients, and roughly 190 million people have a MyChart account, per Naples Daily News. With that kind of reach, scammers can make a message look convincing by attaching a familiar logo or trusted health care name, particularly when Medicare or health benefits are mentioned. Trevor Berceau, Epic’s director of research and development, posted on the company’s MyChart site warning users about an increase in attempts to deceive users through fake emails, text messages, phone calls, and websites that appear official.”
To avoid mishaps, hospitals are repeating the same basic advice: don’t click on links in suspicious emails and only sign onto MyChart via the hospitals’ websites or the MyChart app. Patients are also told not to share any sensitive information and if they have any doubts they should contact the hospitals or medical practices directly.
How secure are health records? I received another patient’s post-op protocol on Thursday, September 10. Our local hospital appeared in the top 10 of the most serious medical breaches in the last five years. Yep, targets. Big fat juicy ones.
