Google: How Is That Changing of the Guard Going?

September 8, 2026

Where is that next frontier model? What about that outage on September 3, 2026? So how is the changing of the guard going?

Oh, is that “Outstanding.” Did I hear that correctly?

Here’s something interesting from Google related to Gemini via the Europe Says blog: “Google Named The New Boss Of Gemini 4. Both Of Gemini’s Co-Leads Quit The Same Day.” Quoc Le and Oriol Vinyals were Google Gemini’s co-technical leaders and they both walked out of Google HQ. They were joined by Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat. That very same day when Koray Kavukcuoglu, the former technology chief of DeepMind, is named the head of Gemini 4. Who is this person?

“Kavukcuoglu has spent 13 years at DeepMind. He started its deep learning team and led the work behind WaveNet and DQN. He is not an outsider parachuted in, and nobody has questioned the choice.”

Apparently nobody questioned the choice, except Vinyals and Le. Vinyals worked at Google for thirteen years with Jeff Dean, who is also the same person showing him out. Now Dean, Le, Vinyals, and Ghemawat are starting their own AI company called Discovery Loop and it proposes to:

“‘Scientific discovery is bottlenecked,’ the site argues. Not the method, which it calls one of humanity’s great inventions, but the execution. Someone still has to propose an experiment, run it, read the results, and go again, one loop at a time. Discovery Loop wants to automate the loop and run thousands in parallel. It starts with machine learning research, then does something telling: it points those capabilities at its own stack and becomes its own first customer. Only then does it go after the National Academy of Engineering’s Grand Challenges, from better medicines to clean water to securing cyberspace.”

Yep, that automated model design at Google is rolling along… except that Google’s partner Alibaba Qwen keeps moving forward and Google is using one model tuned for different purposes. Didn’t Le. Vinyals did punch a hole in their company’s plan by saying they’re not super strong at developing new ideas for the models to test.

Google is still pressing forward despite the recent organizational enhancements. It begs the question if Google’s blue chip consulting management method works. Sure, sort of. Are the Google wizards feeling the pressure of open source AI, spending too much money, and unhappy users? Nah! Of course not. Google is the universal search service. With Google’s links to Alibaba is this a useful question, “Is Google being played?”
