A Lawyer Writer Philosopher Explains AI

A respectable or disreputable (depending on your opinion) technology expert is Cory Doctorow. He’s not afraid to tell people the truth about things and The Nerve News shares Doctorow’s latest views on AI and it’s not surprising if you’ve ever used the technology in your job: “Cory Doctorow: The People Who Tell You ‘AI Is Changing Everything’ Are Lying.” He says that “sovereign AI” is an imaginary need. In fact, if global leaders turned off AI chatbots nothing would change except kids would be forced to do their homework again. He contrasts that with Office 365 being shut down and the world would grind to a halt.

That is the metaphor he uses to explain that AI is not changing everything. He laments that AI will change the world after it consumes all the resources. To prove that AI is doing null, he interviewed Nikhil Suresh of Hermit Tech. Suresh has spoken with hundreds of executives over eighteen months about how AI is affecting their businesses.

“‘We’re facing a coordination problem around executives being honest around the AI gains they’ve witnessed – if they co-operate, they keep their jobs. If they defect, they will possibly be fired by their embarrassed peers (who have now been implicitly called liars, cowards, or incompetents) and then replaced with someone that will toe the line anyway. If they could all admit the truth at once there might be some hope, but there is no way to coordinate that event. In other words, corporate leadership is starting from the premise that AI has (or will) radically change the business, and they’re working backwards from that premise to find the evidence to support this article of faith.’”

Suresh continues that the pressure to support AI is akin to cult tactics: you don’t believe, you get the boot. It’s an “emperor is naked” situation. Suresh said he never saw a successful enterprise AI project.

Cory Doctorow is the truth teller shaman the world needs about the devolution of AI. Pound the drum. Bom bom bom for the digital shaman’s insights.
