Dead Internet and Monetization: There Is an Answer But Not a Popular One

“Dead Internet” — Definitely definitive and cute. The phrase in rural Kentucky meant that one of our sketchy service providers went offline or a day dreaming farmer chopped cables. Now the phrase mean that smart software is creating content and pumping it out to semi-conscious humanoids and, of course, smart software developed by US, French, German, Chinese, and heaven knows what other countries’ innovators.
I am not 100 percent certain I know what “life” is. I know even less. There’s the unfortunate skunk my French bulldog frightened with his screeching bark causing the skunk to run into a roadway to be crushed by a garbage truck. There’s the “dead romance” dead. I will remember my first crush Kathy. I wanted her to write me when my family moved to Brazil. She didn’t. I have no idea where her family moved upon our return a couple of years later. That romance was dead. I am going to upload this essay via the Internet (AT&T willing), and I hope that its system is alive or I will have to use my T-Mobile back up connection. Thus, the Internet is not officially dead.

I read “The Dead Internet Theory Is Real. And It’s Killing the Web As We Know It.” My reaction was, “I think this Inc. Magazine write up is going to be orthogonal to my view. I was not disappointed.
The write up asks:
If you can’t monetize human attention, what do you monetize?
Right off the starting line, I know the answer. One will monetize human weakness. With a bit of poking around on the Dark Web and its fellow traveler Telegram, a humanoid can purchase interesting products and services. Spend time clicking on Facebook-type ads presented on online services, and one can explore a wonderland of offers and opportunities. Immerse yourself in TikTok and the nifty algorithms the Toutiao system relies upon and let one’s brain click to intake mode. Absorb weaponized information.
Believe me, people will pay to participate in the living Internet. A person who makes money writing “real” news for a dead tree outfit may call the agentic world now emerging as a “killer” that will leave behind a dead Internet. Baloney.
The Inc. write up says:
The “dead internet theory”—the old message-board conspiracy holding that most online activity isn’t human—is real. It’s now just a measurement dispute. And buried inside that dispute is a much bigger story: The business model that has financed the web for 30 years just erased its founding assumption.
Yeah, remember the demise of Babylonian cuneiform writing on clay tablets. Just visit one of those summer art fairs and count the number of fungible objects crafted from clay, stone, and maybe wood that carry messages. We have one hanging near our front door. It says, “Welcome.” Complaining about the change which communication media evidences is a waste of time and, quite frankly, not in line with the online world to which I am exposed.
The real message of the write up is that advertising and surveillance is an artifact. Nope. These are strong pillars to the Internet to which I am exposed. What the write up omits is that agentic systems will empower online fraud, weaponized information, and commerce in illegal products and services.
Is that troubling you, pilgrim?
The write up says:
Thirty years ago, we let a business model choose us, and we have spent decades living with the consequences—the surveillance, the erosion of privacy, the collapse of the institutions that once paid for serious journalism. Now the model is dying of natural causes, killed off not by our better judgment but by our own software. We get a second chance at a decision we barely realized we were making the first time. It would be a shame to sleepwalk through it again.
I want to point out that 30 years ago the “Internet of then” created the Internet of today. The Internet of tomorrow is visible if one looks at the horizon and online statistics. Smart software, surveillance data, and humans’ penchant for doing bad things has been bundled into one online movement. There is no shortage of jet fuel for this system. The next Internet is now rolling down the Information Superhighway.
One can do the would coulda shoulda mantra every day, but wheels up is going to happen and quickly. Those who are in reactive mode won’t know what happened. Those who are proactive are busy designing the improvements for this news system.
“What?” you ask. “Companies are building for an agentic online world with slop content and scams?”
I say, “You need to hear what I say about the future of online in my upcoming talk at a law enforcement, cyber fraud, and intelligence conference in September 2026.”
Net net: Forget that dead stuff. Not going to happen. AI has been the gift of a lifetime for bad actors. Commercial payoffs may be tough to quantify. Bad actors just count their take saying, “Be grateful.”
