The big AI

As a dinobaby, I am amused by the hand wringing over smart software. As an old dinobaby (82 and counting), I am fascinated at the loss of basic skills like reading, writing, and ‘rithmetic in young people. These individuals will be video forward. Doomscrolling is the primary method for getting “smart.” When dumb people are unable to perceive their intellectual limitations, it is painfully obvious that machine-generated content will become the primary type of old-school information written in note, book, essay, monograph, dissertation, short form video script, and love notes transmitted via Instagram-type services.

The essay “The End of an Era: We Knew This Day Would Come” is the work of an entity identified as Hugh Howey. The longish essay explains that smart software has created a lousy future for “real writers.” Why write when a smart software system can spit out words. We just installed a version of Google Gemma on an old Mac Mini M2. Anyone in grade school, high school, and college can crank out text. The model hasn’t been update for four months, but it is good enough as long as current events are sidestepped. How much did it cost? Nothing. (For fun, here’s a probably AI generated post about stupidity’s growing grip from the estimable Cheezburger outfit.)

Thanks, MidJourney. The smart robots look quite silly. Good enough, a high water market today.

The essay includes human touches: Curse words, personal anecdotes, Fog Index “easy” word choice, and short paragraphs. As soon as I watched a demo of content output from smart software, I made darned sure that the rule imposed on me by Edwardine Sperling my high school English teacher in 1958 were sidelined. Edwardine believed that Tressler & Christ were unassailable. Yeah, sure, Edwardine. Thus, article becomes write up and really crazy becomes estimable. It’s a lame code from a challenged dinobaby. What do you expect?

In this 2700 word effort, one sentence stands out. In my opinion, this is the killer point:

The first prediction is that publishers weather a few of these big AI scandals, but as years go by, publishers care more about profits and they let things slide.

Publishers figure out how to make money by issuing crypto currency or running for fee chatbots that mimic characters in big selling books or…. Now let’s think about that “or.”

As costs continue to go up, those cheap AI systems look pretty darned good for fixing typos, making suggestions to improve flow, identifying and eventually correcting factual errors, etc. Bingo. Once the mice are in the old house, good luck getting the critters to leave.
If an AI book makes big bucks, savvy MBA grads fresh from the ethical outfits like Harvard and Stanford will logically conclude more AI books like the big seller are needed and fast. Ergo: AI books are a little thing now and will be an Ed Sullivan-type really big thing tomorrow. Who cares about helping the poor addled F. Scott Fitzgerald? Use one of the red hot Chinese models and take the cash to the bank.
Authors like the young scholars described in the somewhat frightening Cheezburger link will not know how to write a book any other way. So what if the book explains the glory of Thielism, features a Silicon Valley VC as the hero, and includes a love interest assembled in Shenzhen with a heart of silicon and the brain of Kimi? Believe me. No one.

I liked the Howey essay whether written by human with or without the input of AI. In the 2700 words, the killer point is about profits. Let the big publishers further consolidate and create oligopolies. Let the MBAs take over. The baloney about the craft of certain big name publishers will spoil in the luminescence of smart software.

Net net: Make friends with an AI tech bro.
