Two Googley Things: We Are Number One and We Want to Do AI Standards

Another dinobaby post. No AI unless it is an image. This dinobaby is not Grandma Moses, just Grandpa Arnold.
I know I am not Number 1; my mother told me this when I was quite young. I am not sure I can create global standards even if I were induced to take on the job. I quite like being an obscure dinobaby, and I pride myself on having old-fashioned, hopelessly out-of-date standards. I even go to bed at 9 pm each evening.
But in this short essay (now charmingly called a blog post by those much younger than I) I want to call attention to two Google actions. The first is pure PR and what I think is paid content marketing and the second is the idea of cranking up a global standard for the next big thing the Silicon Valley bros have embraced. I think “clutched” is a better word. More desperate that embraced and certainly more evocative.

The first item is trivial. A mid-tier consulting firm charges clients for its advice. No problem. For those with some marketing clout, one can become the Tony Stevens or Yuri Mitin of a particular topic or hobby horse. I noticed this Googley output in a Google official blog: “Google Cloud named Leader in the 2026 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for AI Infrastructure.” To me this means, Google has more data centers and / or access to other people’s data centers than most outfits on earth. If that is not sufficiently sweeping, let’s toss in the idea of the universe. That scale seems to line up with Google’s aspirations.
This July 6, 2026, blog post (no mere essay for the Googley folks) says:
Today, we are pleased to announce that Google has been named a Leader in the inaugural Gartner? Magic Quadrant™ for AI Infrastructure, positioned highest for ‘Ability to Execute’ and furthest for ‘Completeness of Vision’. We believe their findings validate our dedication to solving these challenges internally and for our customers.
Okay, number one. Google and the mid tier outfit peg its cloud as better able to execute and deliver a complete vision. Execute what? I have no idea. I assume this is the notion of renting hardware, software, and services to a customer. That matches up with an outfit like Njalla operating somewhere in Western Europe or maybe Southeast Asia. These cloudy services can be “distributed.” Most of them allow a customer to spin up an account, order a self managed virtual machine, and do their business. I am not certain if Google operates like Flokinet or if it makes an effort to know what’s happening with every virtual machine on its Number One service. That could be tough because some of those customers take steps to make such administrative oversight tricky. “Hey, where did that VM go?” Another systems engineer says, “No clue, dude.”
The write up about the Number Oneness says:
As your infrastructure investment grows, you need to balance raw performance and cost to make AI applications economically viable. Taking a ‘buy now, integrate later’ approach to AI is becoming unsustainable. By combining pre-integrated hardware and open software frameworks that feature flexible consumption models, we deliver a unified system engineered for better performance per dollar across training, reinforcement learning, and inference.
Yep, cost. I would ask, “But what if the Google uses data on its systems to inform its smart software? Is that a ‘cost’?” I know the answer to my question because I have been in Googley meetings. That answer is, “Hey, we can’t do that? Anyway we wouldn’t do that.” Okay, I believe that Google has an ethical compass. No problemo.
Google’s essay winds up with a wind up for the mid tier consulting firm. (I would not suggest reproducing the subjective magic quadrant based on General Eisenhower’s four square diagrams which have been brilliantly recycled as the Boston Consulting dog, star, cash cow chart. Mid tier consulting firms protect their templates more aggressively than General Eisenhower went after his foes.
I will come back to this “We’re number one” blog post in a moment.
The second Googley item is “A Framework for Frontier AI and the Dawning of a New Age.” Like David Sachs and Elon Musk, X.com is becoming a publishing platform for the really big influential people with really, really big ideas. This Googley post states:
The US is well positioned, given its economic and technical standing, to take the first step in developing such a framework. It could establish a new Standards Body modelled on a federally overseen public-private partnership or self-regulatory organisation, much like the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), with a board that includes independent leading technical experts and open-source representatives. Funding would need to be substantial and likely mostly come from industry, in order to attract world-class technical talent and provide the necessary compute resources for large-scale testing.
One question: How well is that FINRA entity working? I thought cyber crime, particularly financial crime, was experiencing a bit of a renaissance. AI, while a struggle for some organizations, seems to be the technology enabling a new criminal gold rush. I would point out that cyber criminals can use AI because it is available, good enough, and enables fast cycle test attacks. Once a gap is identified, then those crafty agentic functions can automate the cyber crime operation. If one fails, just spin up a new one. (Is it possible to put some of the components for an agentic cyber crime money laundering operation on the cloud services identified in the mid tier consulting firm’s magic quadrant confection? Answer: Tough to get.)
How would the Googley standards outfit work? Well, that would be a voluntary set up. Then there would be an assessment protocol. I assume this would be fully objective and not disadvantage certain outfits; for example, the Googley Cloud. What if a vulnerability were found? That’s easy the FINRA-type outfit would work with the AI vendor to fix up the problem. Would thjis approach keep innovations compartmentalized so the AI vendor does leak its intellectual property? I think the answer is going to be, “Of course. Don’t you trust us?” Yeah, sure I do.
The X.com missive adds:
This US-initiated effort would provide a strong starting point for creating shared international standards on Frontier AI. Since this technology is going to affect the entire planet, ideally this framework would spur the international community to reach a consensus on how to manage the most serious risks while ensuring everyone has access to and can benefit from the opportunities that AI brings.
Would any nation-states be blocked from this new kumbaya undertaking? The quick answer is, “Of course not. Don’t you trust us to be scientific?” Well, no because I can envision situations in which certain companies linked to adversaries of the United States might be excluded. What countries’ AI experts? My hunch is that Chinese, North Korean, Iranian, and probably some former allies of the US would not be invited to the live and Google Meet hoe downs.
If I am correct, this global baloney is not going to fly. Based on my personal experience, trust in US big technology seems to be declining. My hunch is that Google thinks that it is essentially a super power in the League of Big Technology Companies. Therefore, Google, not the US, is the catalyst or the sun around which other AI outfits and organizations orbit. Therefore, it is logical that Google head up the AI standards outfit. Forget countries. This is about cementing Google as the global AI super power. Excluded companies and countries will get their come uppance in the future.
Google wants to control the future. Whose? Mankind’s, you silly goose. The X.com emission concludes:
There is both huge excitement and uncertainty around AI, and both are warranted. But the future is not yet written, we must use this precious window before AGI arrives to shape this technology for the benefit of all humanity. What we collectively do now will determine how the next phase of civilisation unfolds. By safely stewarding AGI into the world, we can enter a new golden age of scientific discovery and progress, and usher in a bright future of incredible human flourishing.
Okay, so what?
Taken together these two Googley write ups make clear:
- Google has a deep concern, maybe fear, that it will not be the winner in the Cloud or AI. It makes sense to tout the fact that a mid tier consulting firm identifies Google as Number One. Well, maybe.
- Google has a need to be recognized as the one commercial firm with the power, money, reputation, people, and strategic vision to handle artificial intelligence in the “right way.” For me, that means Google wants to seize control now before some upstart from Z.ai starts organizing Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern AI pretenders.
- Tossing in the need for global infrastructure and the fact that Google has this in place at this time means that when super smart software débuts, the Google will be the Big Dog at least in the US and (it hopes) a few other countries.
- China is a problem. Excluding China is the solution. Kumbaya that!
Net net: Looking at these two write ups, I think I discern some problems in AI Toyland. Why? Compare this approach to pushing Google’s AI agenda with how Google’s search service operated when Backrub gave way in September 1998. One was a service that grew by word of mouth and consistently positive user experiences. Now 28 years later we get mid tier consulting firm’s judgments and for-fee posts on X.com (formerly Twitter). Something’s not working.
