Research Scientist: I Have Not Used My Own Words Since 2022

Another dinobaby post. No AI unless it is an image. This dinobaby is not Grandma Moses, just Grandpa Arnold.
Right off the bat I want to make clear my lack of educational credentials. I dropped out of my Ph.D. program at the University of Illinois to join an outfit now known as Halliburton Nuclear. No academic institution pays much attention to me, but I have been asked (probably by accident) to lecture at the University of Michigan, Catholic University (Washington, DC), the University of Louisville, Yale University, and Heriot-Watt University in Scotland. I have received awards; for example, one-horse entities like the State of New York and the late 1980s version of the old American Society for Information Science (ASIS) (the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T)). I have written more than a dozen books and monographs; some published by “real” publishers and more recently by myself for the attendees at my cyber crime lectures. That’s about it for my academic credibility. On a scale of one to 10, I estimate that I am a 4 (dull normal) type of learner.
Why is this explanation relevant on July 5, 2026?
I just read the essay “Opinion: I Was Not Allowed To Type Prompts Into ChatGPT During My Chalk Talk And This Is Discrimination.” I am, I suppose, not 100 percent convinced about the the research approach explained in “opinion” and first-person detail. The author is Dr. Rachel Simmons, a post-doctoral fellow at Stanford University. If you have read my blog posts in Beyond Search, you know that I make fun of researchers who make up stuff; for example, I have pointed my dinobaby claw at the head of the “ethics” (!) department at Harvard as a result of questions about data in a research paper about ethics from the top ethicist at the school where that intellectual stick-in-the-mud William James spent time. I have also reminded people that the president of Stanford University certainly seems to have fumbled his research method. As I understand the misstep, Photoshopping images to support medical research is not what Abraham Lincoln had in mind when he said, “Honor is better than honors.” I think the write is a little bit of 21st-century snootism and a dollop of “Yeah, I cheat, so what dumb bro?” Let’s treat this essay not as satire but as actual factual because I believe everything I read on the Internet.
The basic message I took from the essay is rage. Something is under the alleged author’s sidesaddle. The scholar — note that this is a possible female — openly explained that ChatGPT was essential to her unfortunately all-too-common approach to homework, 9th-grade essay writing, HR documents, and marketing collateral. Just let AI do it and chill at the Coupa, once a Stanford favorite coffee spot. Furthermore, allegedly some other scholars or at least academics were not thrilled with this approach to original research. The author of the argumentum ad indignationem states:
Let me be clear about something: I am an excellent scientist. My publication record speaks for itself. I have first-author papers in high-impact journals. I have secured independent funding. I have mentored students. I have done all of the things that one is supposed to do to earn a tenure-track position. And I have done approximately 85% of them by typing prompts into a large language model and then moderately editing the output. This is not a secret. This is how science works now. When I write a paper, I prompt ChatGPT to “write an introduction for a manuscript about [topic] that establishes significance and identifies the gap in the literature.” When I design experiments, I ask Claude to “suggest controls for a CRISPR knockout study in mammalian cells.” When I draft grants, I request “specific aims for an R01 on [research area] that are innovative but not so innovative that study section will be confused.” This is my scientific process. It is efficient. It is modern. And it produces results.
Yeah, great. You deserve respect for the mental mindset that describes non-reproducible research reasonably well. Then I came upon this statement:
My own words? I haven’t used my own words since 2022. I’m not even sure I have my own words anymore. When I try to think without a prompt box in front of me, my mind returns only a vague sense of fog and the faint echo of a cursor blinking. My thoughts are not organized into paragraphs. They do not have topic sentences. They are just fragments. Impressions. My job is just… prompt.
Okay, let’s think about this for a moment.
I acknowledge that each person “thinks” or “ideates” in a unique way. This scholar needs the help of a large language model. Some of the owners of LLMs are facing litigation for unauthorized use of another entity’s intellectual property. Such “borrowing” of knowledge shaped into a blog post or book is familiar to me. The estimable ChatGPT cited me as an expert on cyber fraud in response to one of my prompts. Yeah, stupid, I know. I had to tell ChatGPT, “Hey, don’t quote me to myself. I know you have sucked in my information without permission.”
I routinely feed statements I find via Telegram’s and Yandex’s search functions into ChatGPT and a couple of other large language models to try to figure out if the alleged author of the information is anchored in reality or just an agent-controlled spam bot. I know that LLMs make egregious errors. How? I look at what the outputs from several different models report about the text I inserted. The answers are not homogeneous; they are usually less than consistent. What do I do? I have my team help me figure out exactly what trick an outfit like POGO or Haowang Guarantee is using to do its “business.”
However, the errors I encounter make clear that depending on an LLM, even if it is a zippy one like Qwen 3.7, is a risky business. Therefore, caution is important based on my experience.
I dumped BearBlog because its cycling and somewhat eccentric owner informed me that his AI thought that my blog posts were generated by AI. Yeah, okay. I exited that outfit and now use BearBlog as an example of one of the numerous problems smart software present. Not only does it make up information, LLMs go off the rails pointing out that my intentionally idiosyncratic writing style is AI generated. Sorry, dude, stick to avoiding trouble in the townships and worrying about potable water in Cape Town. Those are better uses of your AI talent. What about smart software practicing medicine? Yeah, that’s a great idea. Can AI manage companies? Perhaps the modern management methods of BAIT (big AI tech) outfits are informed by AI? Great job, bros.
Several observations from this dinobaby are warranted:
- I find that when I do work the old fashioned way, I find it easier to remember details.
- I think this essay, like Swift’s tale of Gulliver, tells us something important about the direction in which “real scientific research” is headed. As people depend on LLMs for guidance about political matters, scientists are too. Therefore, the power of the LLMs lies in the editorial predilections of their system engineers. There is some truth in this somewhat crazed essay.
- The process of — get this method, kids — writing on notecards as I did when I was a debater in high school and then in college facilitated what I perceived as good insights. Yep, old fashioned work has some value. That work is not fast; it is deliberate and slows down the mind’s ability to jump wildly from place to place without a hypervisor paying attention.
- The work one does the old fashioned way makes it easy to stand in front of a group, present ideas, draw diagrams (hopefully coherent to my listeners (students) who are mostly US government cyber fraud investigators), and listen to questions and criticisms so I can respond (hopefully) in a reasonably intelligent manner. Because I am 82, I worry about my ability to recall, reason, and present information on the fly the way I did when I was a fat, eye-glass wearing teen arguing something like the National Defense Education Act or equally off-the-wall topic. Without that “work,” I doubt I would have won much more than an “Also Participated” certificate.
Rage is okay. Anger can be constructive. Smart software is, in my opinion, in its infancy. I don’t care how great published research is. The president of Stanford had an impressive record. Too bad most of it was non-reproducible, tainted by cheating and self aggrandizement, and did not work as the “data” suggested it would. The guy was in the pharma sector. I ask myself, “Did his faux research kill any kids?”
Here’s the last quote I will present from the rage essay:
It is how things are done. It is how everything is done. The academy just hasn’t caught up yet. In the meantime, if any search committees are reading this: I am still available. My research program is innovative and well-structured. I have a clear vision for my independent career. It’s saved in a Google Doc that I can share with you. ChatGPT and I worked very hard on it.
